Coordinator of Women’s Independence and Safety
A mother of three children, she engages in producing and selling pastries. She is one of the leading figures in Strong Women Ambovombe the local organization which aims to support women towards economic independence. At a young age, Mamy had to leave school for financial reasons and start working.
Her motto: “I will spare no effort to ensure my children have a better future.”
Mamy comes from a family living under challenging conditions. Her parents were unemployed and raised nine children by selling sweet bread. Her father enrolled her in school at age six, but she had to stop studying at age 15 and look for work because there was no money for further studies. Over time, she started selling things because she couldn’t find stable employment. She saved some money and continued studying, but in her last grade, she became pregnant with her first child and had to stop her studies to get married.
Today, she has three children and has separated from their father. To provide for her family, Mamy started selling sweet bread. Mamy feels that she must continue studying, and now she is happy that her children study in a private school funded by IRC Africa. She continues her studies, including learning English, with our support. She also produces and sells pastries in her spare time when she is not studying.
Mamy is a member of a women’s organization, comprised of 50 women engaged in small loans to enable their children to study in schools and expand their trading businesses. She leads her fellow women and girls within Strong Women Ambovombe to collect money to secure their and their children’s futures.
Her motto: “My children will not have to go through the hardships I went through”
Therefore, she works to ensure a better future for them.
